Unplanned Fatherhood

Did you plan for your child? I didn’t!!!

Approximately three million unplanned pregnancies occur in the United States every year. That number accounts for half of the amount of pregnancies. Yes, six million women become pregnant annually. This next fact I find extremely shocking. Of the three million unplanned pregnancies 42% of them end in abortion.

My first child falls into the 50% unplanned. I will not say whether abortion is the right or wrong thing to do, but I will say we kept our child. In fact it was and will always be one of the greatest things that have ever happened to me.

At the time my wife and I were completely unprepared for having a child, had no money saved up and no plans. To be honest, we had planned on a separating before we found out about the child birth. When I was told I was not mad but not happy either. Immediately after being told though this feeling of responsibility came over me, I turned to my wife and said “we need to make this work”. Just to fast forward a little, we planned a second child the following year and have now been together 12 years.

I guess the point of this article is to let future fathers that not everything is planned. Some of the best things in life happen by mistake. Is there a guide or checklist to prepare you for child birth, I am sure you can find something at the book store. From my experience though, nothing can truly prepare you for what you are about to embark on.

This is going to be a rough journey, take it one step at a time and be patient.
